What is Agentic AI?

Agentic AI is the transformative leap that enables AI to go beyond answering questions or making fun presentations. It’s your proactive, goal-driven, intelligent assistant that takes actions autonomously.

Agentic AI independently pursues goals by learning, making decisions, taking actions, and adapting to context. All this is done without human intervention, and agentic AI can overcome obstacles as they arise.

Think of agentic AI like your own personal Jarvis/Friday (although maybe not quite as cool and advanced). Imagine Tony Stark wants two comedy movie tickets on a Friday night with comfortable seats, and he wants to get dinner with Pepper nearby before the show.

He says, “Jarvis/Friday (agentic AI), get me tickets to that one show at [location] and dinner, too.” Jarvis/Friday would proceed to plan the full movie evening – picking the movie and seats, finding alternatives if the movie is sold out, booking tickets and making dinner reservations, and adding the event to your calendar. And it’s all done with your preferences and existing schedule in mind!

Generative AI versus Agentic AI

Now that you’ve got a slightly deeper understanding of agentic AI, let’s understand the difference between generative AI and agentic AI.

What does generative AI do, exactly? It starts mostly with creating new data based on patterns learned from existing data. This can be applied to content generation and data transformation. Generative AI can reshape, summarize, or enhance data to make it AI-ready so that it’s cleaner, more structured, and better suited for downstream tasks like analysis or automation. In a content generation in the sense, you can build any type of content – blogs, white papers, PowerPoint presentations, etc. Essentially, generative AI is great for single-turn tasks. It’s reactive and operates within a bounded context.

• You type a question in ChatGPT, and it gives you an answer.
• You ask Adobe Firefly to edit away a cellphone in someone’s hand, and it replaces the phone with a normal hand (or sometimes, a random finger).
• You turn on Microsoft Copilot during team meetings to take notes, and it sends you all your follow-up tasks after the meeting.

 

Agentic AI, on the other hand, is autonomous and goal oriented. It doesn’t just stop at output generation. For example, in procurement, the agentic AI system can identify low-inventory items, evaluate vendors, negotiate pricing using preset parameters, and trigger reorders – without human intervention.
